Review: Metal-Observer (9.5/10)

Success wise SAXON went downhill after the “Crusader” album. The band tried to gain a foothold in America and tried more mass compatible songs such as on the following “Innocence Is No Excuse”. Apart from angered old fans in Europe SAXON did not manage much, though. But at least I am really happy that this album exists, as it is among my personal eternal top favourites.

Even though the CD by far did not sound as heavy anymore as the previous albums, SAXON had not forgotten how to Rock. A bit more polished, yes, more melodic, catchier, yep, but still damn good. Biff Byford’s vocals alone are half the rent already. The man just cannot interpret a song badly and that is a fact! To explain the music of SAXON would be nonsense, either you already know their very own style or you change that as soon as you can. The albums of the Britons (mostly) belong to the Metallic general education!!!

The way the guitars are hammering, let loose one mad riff after the other and still produce lots of great melodies is pure goose bump feeling. And this album is filled to the brim. Each song is almost ideal for the live environment, no filler, all killer! Everybody, who had a chance to see SAXON live, at least knows the anti war ballad “Broken Heroes” or the certified rocker “Rock’n'Roll Gypsy”. And who likes these two songs also has an open ear for songs such as the swift cracker “Call Of The Wild”, the mega hymn “Back On The Streets” or the hefty sing along “Devil Rides Out”.

The Album

Amorphis - Tuonela (1999)

“Tuonela” is the fourth full-length album by Amorphis. It is named for Tuonela, the realm of the dead in Finnish mythology. It shares inspiration with many of their productions in the text and themes of the Kalevala or Finnish Epic. The style of the album is less progressive, like its predecessor, Elegy, but rather a stoner/doom metal record, with progressive metal/progressive rock elements except few more progressive and rock-sounding songs including “Divinity”, “The Way”, “Summer’s End”, “Tuonela” and “Northern Lights”. “Northern Lights” is a bonus track for the Japanese edition. The album was licensed to Nuclear Blast in Europe. A music video was made for the song “Divinity”.
